High Def VS Standard DVD

Gizmodo has uploaded a chain of crisp, high-res images from the Lord of the Rings capturing the same frames from the film and showing the difference between a standard DVD player and a high-definition player.

The difference really is amazing - for a long time I have thought that the viewing quality of standard DVDs was more than adequate, but being able to see the two side by side in a direct comparison - well, it's making me seriously consider getting a next-generation player.

The images shown in the email to me looks as if the standard is far and away better than the High DEF.You might have put them the wrong way around.

Nope, not the wrong way around...

Each pair of images show the HD version of the image first followed by the standard DVD image.

Admittedly the HighDef is a little darker, but the crisper details are tough to ignore.

We might have to agree to disagree on this one :)

Both Alex and Adam are correct, depending on how your computer monitor is connected VGA or DVi.

However, HD is darker in the dark areas BUT the last image, HD shows up the pores of the skin better than SD.

ON saying that SD is better at gray shades because black is not actually completely black, not in the real world anyway.

So if the monitor / movie delivery system (Plasma/LCD/projector/DLP) is not set up properly with the correct gamma, HD would not be very convincing.

to b honest standard dvd is very poor.u need a HD tv a HD player to see the benefits.my xbox360 plays games in HD and with additional HD player which costs $200 u can experience movies in HD.I will also bet money on the fact that watching a HD movie on a tiny computer screen does not do it justice.A 19,20,22 inch screens r small and plasmas r not worth your time aspecially when playing games.sales people will tell u anything 2 get a sale, and all those u beaut features wont stop burns on the screen.the real problem is the battle between HD and BLUERAY.
