There Can Be Only One.... Highlander Remake

The same writers who turned Iron Man into a worldwide hit have been signed on to pen the new Highlander film. Not entirely a remake, the new film will apparently make certain changes and improvements on the original story.

For those unaware of Christopher Lambert's back catalogue, the original Highlander was a 1986 sci-fi movie which dealt with the concept of a race of "Immortals" who can only be killed through a beheading. If one Immortal beheads another, the victor absorbs the loser's power in a process known as "The Quickening".

Hence the tagline of the film, "There Can Be Only One!", which refers to the idea that these Immortals (who have all become expert swordsmen) will continue to fight each other throughout time until there is only one, ultra powerful being left. The story focuses on Scottish swordsman Connor MacLeod (Christopher Lambert).

Writing it all down, it sounds like a fairly silly story. Even still, the original was immensely popular, and co-starred the legendary Sir Sean Connery. With an original soundtrack by Queen, it spawned four sequels and three TV series.

A quote at The Hollywood Reporter from Jim Davis, a producer of the film, explained that it will be more than just a macho swordfighting film:

"I would hate to think that people viewed 'Highlander' as a sword fighting movie because it's much more than that," he said. "The issues of an immortal falling in love with a woman and knowing she's going to grow old and die in your arms, those are very romantic issues to deal with."
So it sounds like this could be a good one to rent if The Notebook is currently out of stock...
