New Hancock Images + Trailer

source: DVD-Forum
A set of new images have been released from Will Smith's upcoming superhero film Hancock - in which he portrays a reluctant and unpopular superhero in desperate need of an image overhaul.

Also starring Charlize Theron and Jason Bateman, this movie looks like it holds a whole lot of promise. Personally I still prefer him in more serious dramatic roles such as The Persuit of Happyness and I Am Legend, but there is no denying that the man has great comic timing.

The trailer is embedded below, along with the many new stills from the upcoming twist on the superhero formula just below:

Children Of Men on TV

source: slashfilm.com
The modern-classic Children of Men is set to become a new television show, as the script for a pilot episode is currently being written.

The film, based on the book by P.D James and directed by Alfonso Cuaron, was one of the best films of the last decade, despite having a very silly name.

It now seems that David Eick, the man behind the extremely successful reboot of Battlestar Gallactica and the less successfully revamped Bionic Woman, is writing a pilot loosely based on the film.

The film explored the concept of a not-so-distant future in which no child had been conceived for 16 years. Clive Owen played a former political activist who helped escort the last pregnant woman on Earth to safety.

While the film version used only the concept of the book, and avoided the exact same story, so too will Eick's television adaptation.

He claims it will focus on the concept of a society having no responsibility towards younger generations, and the freedom to do what they wish with the knowledge that they are the last surviving humans.

This concept sounds very intriguing, and if it is even half as exciting as the film, it looks set to be a winner.

Amazing Advertising for New Star Wars

source: slashfilm.com
A little while ago we posted about the new Star Wars CGi animated film that is coming out later in the year (The Empire Strikes Back)...

The current treat though is for the incredibly creative advertising material currently on offer around the U.S. that is working to promote the movie. Slashfilm.com have posted up shots of the campaign which looks amazing.

Frankly I can honestly say that it makes me want to own a lightsaber. Which I guess makes that a successful advertising campaign. It also makes me a bonafide nerd.

Either way, check it out:

Not impressed? Try looking at it by night...

Do Jedi get to choose their own lightsaber colour? Why is Mace Windu (Samuel L. Jackson) the only Jedi with the snazzy purple one? Someone let me know.

First Images of GI Joe

GI Joe, a favourite cartoon / toyline for any guy who grew up during the 80s, is set to return to the big screen with some big names and familiar faces making up the cast.

Any movie boasting Dennis Quaid and Sienna Miller is always going to get noticed, but this film also happens to have plenty of actors whose names you may not recognise, but whose faces you probably will from probably know.

Ray Park, famous for playing both Darth Maul in Star Wars Episode I and Toad in X-Men will be playing the character of Snake Eyes. A so called "ninja with a glock". Some officially released photos have shown just how well the film is capturing the look and feel of the original GI Joe line, check the images out below:

Other castmates include Ripcord being played by Marlon Wayans (Requiem For A Dream - Let's ignore his work in Norbit and Scary Movie 2 for now), relative newcomer Channing Tatum as GI Joe leader Duke, and Adewale Akkinuoye-Agbaje, who Lost fans may recognise as the ferocious Mr Eko, playing the role of Heavy Duty.

GI Joe is set to hit cinemas as the definitive Summer blockbuster of 2009. Now to play the waiting game...

"Sweded" Remakes

A new and incredibly inventive internet phenomenon has emerged, inspired by Michel Gondry's fantastic, semi surrealist Be Kind Rewind.

In the film, Danny Glover plays the owner of a traditional video store (and we’re talking VHS here) called Be Kind Rewind, in New Jersey.

As he embarks on a mission to spy on competing DVD stores, he leaves his store in the capable hands of Mike (Mos Def) and the not-so-capable Jerry (Jack Black).

When a newly-magnetized Jerry accidentally erases all the videos, the duo must record budget-less recreations of films such as Ghostbusters and King Kong for their loyal store patrons.

Dozens of home-made reinventions have made their way online; in the spirit of Jerry and Mike’s ‘sweded’ films (they claim their new versions are special imports from Sweden).

There are plenty to choose from, and each is wonderfully creative. Some of our favourites include these new versions of Back to the Future, Jurassic Park and Star Wars.

Dirty Harry 6 - Feelin' Lucky?

source: slashfilm.com
Rumours have begun to swirl that Clint Eastwood is about to return to cinema screens as Dirty Harry.

UPDATE 31/03/08

It turns out that the upcoming Clint Eastwood flick is
actually about an elderly bigot who bonds with a Chinese teenager over the old
man's Ford Gran Torino. Unfortunately for Eastwood, this film is probably going
to be an excellent, slow burn film filled with emotional performances and
trademark tragic finale. However, now that we know it's not Dirty Harry 6, it
sounds like the most boring film ever.

On Wednesday, Warner Bros announced a new project called Gran Torino that would be directed by and starring the 78-year-old Oscar winner.

Details were scarce; there was no screenwriter listed, nor did anyone know if principle photography had begun. The only detail was that the film was to be fast tracked for a December release, which can only mean one of two things: 1) Oscar Bait, or 2) Blockbuster.

It seems we are looking at option number 2 with sources indicating Gran Torino will indeed by Dirty Harry 6.

A tipster selling a 1974 Ford Grand Torino Classic has revealed to slashfilm.com that a representative from Village Roadshow Pictures came to check out his car.

The representative told the seller that they were scouting a 1972 Ford Grand Torino for a new Dirty Harry flick.

Apparently, in the film two police officers are shot and killed, one of which is “Dirty” Harry Callahan’s grandson. The 1972 Ford Grand Torino is the killer’s car of choice.

It has been twenty years since Dirty Harry graced the screen in The Dead Pool. How he managed to have a son AND a grandson old enough to be a police officer in that time is fairly impressive.

Gran Torino will be sandwiched between two other Eastwood directed films. The first is The Changeling, which is a murder mystery starring Angelina Jolie, and the second is The Human Factor, a Nelson Mandela biopic starring Morgan Freeman.

Those sound nice. But a Dirty Harry revenge flick? Give that man another Oscar.

Snaps of the Wolfman!

source: slashfilm.com
The first (AMAZING!) images of Benicio Del Toro as The Wolfman have been revealed.

We are to thank make-up legend Rick Baker, who is clearly atoning for his Norbit-sized sins after spending much of the last decade making Eddie Murphy up in films to look either fat, female, or Chinese.

Baker certainly deserves his position as one of the Hollywood make-up greats. He has been responsible for amazing looking characters in Star Wars, Planet of the Apes, the Thriller music video, and An American Werewolf in London.

He has now redesigned his original London Werewolf from 1981 with an equally terrifying and infinitely more impressive creation.

It seems as if The Wolfman will be leaning closer to the horror genre than previously expected, which is refreshing, especially in the age of the PG rated blockbuster. The bloodstains on Benicio seen in this spy shot should have given it away.

Here is The Wolfman in an open shirt, a lovely design that screams “Spring Fashion”:

Which is fitting, because Benicio as The Wolf Man will be released on audiences in the (American) Spring next year. Other castmates include Anthony Hopkins, Hugo Weaving and Emily Blunt.

Spy Photos From J.J. Abrams' Star Trek

source: aintitcool.com
AICN has managed to upload exclusives of shots taken on the sly from the set of 2009's upcoming Star Trek movie.

While you don't see a whole lot, the roving reporter has managed to snap a few photos showing the future Starfleet Academy and plenty of space cadets against a giant blue screen. There is also a shot of a futuristic flying craft/car/trike.

The film, known as either Star Trek, Star Trek XI or Star Trek:0 (depending on which alternative title you believe on imdb.com), stars big-name players such as Winona Ryder, Eric Bana and Karl Urban along with other recognisable faces like Simon Pegg and John Cho. It deals with the young crew setting off into space for the first time, boldy going where no man has gone before.

Set as a prequel back when Captain Kirk first set out on his stellar intergalactic career, this should be a great one.

Even Trekkie veteran Leonard Nimoy, who played Spock in Star Trek for seemingly forever, is also making an appearance in the film. Looks to be a big one. Now, if only somehow the cyborg-zombie threat of the Borg could get involved somehow... but that could be wishing for just a little bit too much.

Muppets On The Big-Screen

source: geeksofdoom.com

The Muppets are returning to cinema screens, with a new screenplay being penned by an unlikely writer.

Jason Segal, who can currently be seen as Alyson Hannigan’s husband in How I Met Your Mother will write the next Muppet Movie.

A strange choice? Well, his comic credentials are actually fairly credible, having had a scene-stealing role as Seth Rogen’s roommate in Knocked Up.

He will also play leading man this April in Forgetting Sarah Marshall, written by Segal himself, and produced by Hollywood’s man-of-the-moment Judd Apatow (The 40-Year-Old Virgin, Superbad, Knocked Up).

Despite these R-Rated prior credits, Segal and Sarah Marshall director Nicholas Stoller pitched the idea for a new Muppet film to Disney. The pair had developed a close working relationship with the Jim Henson Company on the set of Sarah Marshall, with Segal’s character in the film performing a musical version of Dracula with puppets.

It will be a bit of a wait before we see the end result of this new Muppet experiment. However, with the Screen Actors Guild considering going on strike this year, perhaps we’ll be seeing a lot more Muppets in cinemas.

The Incredible Hulk Trailer Online!

Well it's been a long, long time coming, but finally The Incredible Hulk is almost upon us. The trailer is online, and it looks like it could be the movie that everyone hoped from Ang Lee's ill-received Hulk back in 2003.

Hulk SMASH!

Let's be honest, while Ang Lee's version had its moments, it was also plagued by more than its fair share of problems. Comic-book style scene transitions, a really odd villain, mutant-dogs and some really cheesy romantic moments between Eric Bana and Jennifer Connelly.

This new one seems to be bringing Hulk back to its roots. Originally written as a sequel by screenwriter Zac Penn, Ed Norton himself rewrote the script to make it a standalone project - removing all connection with the previous movie and "rebooting" the Hulk story and origins.

The stars are definitely there in spades. Ed Norton playing it up as Bruce Banner, Liv Tyler back in form as the love interest Betty Ross, Tim Roth as professional soldier Emil Blonsky/The Abomination and of course, Robert Downey Jr. aka Tony Stark aka Iron Man making a cameo.

The Abomination!

The enemy in the film, The Abomination, seems to be a worthy adversary for our hero Hulk. Created out of ribcage, adrenaline, aggression, muscle and sinew - he will definitely pull his weight in the fight scenes.

All up, providing the CGI gets neatened up a little bit then this looks to be a worthy blockbuster. An interview between Empire Magazine and director Louis Leterrier (see it here) revealed that one fight scene in the film lasts a full 26 minutes, and Hulk appears within the first 5 minutes of the film.

It's looking to be a great year for Hulkamaniacs. Click on the image below to check out the trailer:

Harry Potter: 7 Books, 8 Films

source: dailymail.co.uk

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hollows, the final chapter in the boy wizard’s saga, is going to be released as two separate installments.

David Yates, who previously helmed “Order of the Phoenix” and is currently in production of “Half Blood Prince”, will also direct the “The Deathly Hallows”.

The 759-page epic finale was deemed too dense to edit down to a 150 minute movie, like the previous five Potter films. Fans were outraged when Yates cut down the 896-page Order of the Phoenix into a slim two hour film.

Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince, the thrilling penultimate story (though now, not penultimate film) will be released November this year.

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part One will arrive November 2010, and Part Two only six months later in May 2011.

So grab a warm Butterbeer and catch up on the final few books now (or why not add the whole series to your Quickflix Queue)!

Fan-cuts of Famous Films

What to do when a film doesn't quite meet expectations? Sure, you can write a bad review up on the Quickflix site, or even go so far as to rewrite a new sequel film script. But some gifted fans out there have gone one step better, and released customised versions of their favourite films.

It all started with Star Wars I: The Phantom Menace. After a lengthy wait to venture back into the Star Wars universe, many excited fans left theatres a little disappointed, complaining about story elements ranging from the blatant marketing tool character known as Jar-Jar Binks, through to the questionable racial stereotypes of major Star Wars races.

Naturally many science-fiction fans were outraged. Every major movie has its fans, but in particular Star Wars fans take things to a different level. Until an alternative movie was released. Titled "The Phantom Edit", it is a fan-edited version of The Phantom Menace which cuts away scenes and elements of the film (such as Jar Jar Binks), rearranging shots and removing unnecessary character dialogue.

Meesa Gone!

Kevin Smith, of Clerks and Mallrats fame is quoted as saying that it was "Smart editing to say the least."

All up, The Phantom Edit cut out 20 minutes of total footage, and was championed by fans and critics alike as being better paced and more focused than the original. Even George Lucas was said to have been interested in viewing a copy.

This caused a bit of a trend.

Now fans are recutting and changing all kinds of different films. For entry level stuff, it's trailers. We have featured a number of them on the site before just like the one below. The trailer here shows The Shining cut to look like a romantic comedy:

Medium-range editing involves crafting short-films. The classic YouTube clip Robocop VS Terminator is over 6 minutes long and splices in footage from a range of films to make it appear as if action-icons Robocop and Terminator are in a vicious deathmatch with each other. See it below:

Endgame stuff though is the feature-length film edit. Thought Pearl Harbor focused a little too much on a love-story? Pearl Harbor: Strength and Honor Edition solves the problem, as someone has edited out the entire love-triangle out of the film, turning it into an action-packed war epic that they claim "pays genuine tribute to the men and women who fought and died at Pearl Harbor."

If you were a little disappointed by the Wachowski Brothers follow ups to their 1999 smash-hit The Matrix, then you might be interested in one of the most celebrated recuts around. DeZionized edits Matrix Reloaded and Matrix Revolutions into a single movie. All of the human city of Zion is removed as part of 129minutes unnecessary footage trimmed from the films.

Not Shown In DeZionized: Zion.

The end result? A movie that many claim as a worthy sequel to the original.

Other Matrix sequel edits go even further, one, known as The Matrix Hacked changes the entire story of the the trilogy, rearranging and adding deleted scenes to craft a completely different plot from the Matrix trilogy.

There are many other examples listed on the web. Whether it is a hardening-up of Michael Bay's Transformers to remove the one-liners and wackiness, or a rearrangement of Quentin Tarantino's Pulp Fiction, so the film now plays in sequential order.

Shown: Transformers (Not Shown: Wackiness)

Now, studios understandably don't particularly love these recuts, but then they don't particularly dislike them either. They are - after all - films that are never sold retail, many are terrible, none will ever be screened in theatres and all are somewhat hard to come by. Add to that there would be considerable backlash felt from anyone targeting its most loyal of fans (much like when Metallica took on Napster).

In the end, a fan-edit is difficult to make, and it's impact is extremely small. But in a web 2.0 world, customised films may one day prove to be the most creative way to build the ultimate personal DVD collection.

Joss Whedon To Return

source: hollywoodreporter.com
He has made scores of fans worldwide with his massive hits such as Buffy The Vampire Slayer, Angel and the not-quite-as-popular (but still brilliant) series Firefly. It's been a long time coming, but Joss Whedon will soon be back with a new show.

The show, set to hit the Fox network late 08/early 09, is titled "Dollhouse", and stars former Buffy regular Eliza Dushku in the main role of "Echo". The series is about a group of men and women who have different personalities given to them so they can complete different assignments. Upon the completion of the assignment, their memories are wiped entirely.

The "blanks" then live out their lives like children, housed in the laboratory environment of "Dollhouse" until they once again are deemed "Active" and assigned a new personality and mission. Their missions are top secret and illegal, and they are hunted down by both Government agencies and a bent-on-revenge former Active.

Eliza Dushku's role of Echo is that of an Active who is becoming self-aware, despite having her memory erased time and time again after successful missions.

Expect action, humour and conspiracies. This one sounds terrific. For all those that missed the Joss Whedon shows when they were on free-to-air, do yourself a favour and add a few of the titles to your Queue.

Sopranos Movie On The Way?

source: msnbc.com
Rumours of a film adaptation of The Sopranos are at fever pitch after confirmation has come from an unusual (but reliable) source.

The manager of the Satin Dolls strip club in New Jersey, Nick D’Urso, received a phone call advising him not to make any renovations to his establishment.

The Satin Dolls strip club is better known to Sopranos fans as the Bada Bing, and D’Urso claims the phone call came from a very reliable insider working on the script for an upcoming Sopranos movie.

After six seasons of perfection, The Sopranos came to a fittingly beautiful, yet abrupt close in last year’s season finale.

Fans scoured the final moments for answers, but the as-always cryptic show creator David Chase was unwilling to divulge the fate of mob boss Tony Soprano and his two families.

HBO has denied any film is in production, a similar stance they made when their other flagship show Sex and the City finished in 2004.

The Sex and the City movie hits cinemas May 30 this year.

So is this good news or bad news? Do we want more answers, or was the finale the only way for the show to go? Could the film be a prequel, focusing on Tony’s grandparents as they enter the country? Let us know how you feel Sopranos fans.

First Look: Tropic Thunder

source: ew.com
A first-look from the new Ben Stiller project "Tropic Thunder" has been released showing a Rambo-like Ben Stiller, platinum blond Jack Black and... wait for it... an African-American character played by Robert Downey Jr.

The synopsis is that a new, epic Vietnam War film in the vein of Apocalypse Now is being created. The writer and director get fed up with the demands of the self-indulgent cast, made up of spoilt Oscar winners, vapid action stars and low-brow comedians, and abandon them all in the thick of the jungle.

While the stars naively think that they are in a dramatic and immersive war recreation, the danger they are in is real and the bullets fired at them aren't blanks.

With cameos from Tom Cruise and Tobey Maguire, this looks to be fantastic. Stiller hasn't directed since 2001's Zoolander, but this is a great premise for satire and I'm confident that he will be able to pull it off.

An image of Tom Cruise in makeup from his role on the film was leaked to the Internet recently, with the star apparently furious at his surprise cameo being spoiled. Have a look below.

UPDATE 19/03/08:
The official trailer has been released for the film at slashfilm.com. I have to say, I love Ben Stiller's dumb one liner he delivers in action-star fashion about 50 seconds in. "Who left the fridge open?"

Check it out below:

Quickflix Member Reviews

Every fortnight or so we like to reward those members of ours who take the time to write movie reviews that catch our eye.

Among the many one-word reviews, there are odd gems here and there from people who take their films seriously enough to spend a bit of time putting their movie opinions out for the world to see.

So congratulations to the following members - you should be receiving your Hoyts tickets in the near future to go and enjoy a film on us!

cmcread - Deja Vu (Blu-ray)
We really liked this movie - I am into things that are a little bit twisted and confusing so this fit my bill perfectly, although there were parts that were unbelievable, if you take your brain out at the door, then this one is totally worth it.

Jeff D. - Tales From Earthsea
Beautifully directed movie from Studio Ghibli! might scare the kids in some areas but otherwise it was rather reminiscent of Laputa (Raputa) from Miyazaki (also Ghibli) but much more focus on the magic elements than most other films from the same studios. A feel good flick that will have you interested from start to finish. Well worth the watch with some popcorn and some friends.

I Am Legend Alternate Ending

source: slashfilm.com
The special edition of I Am Legend is being released to DVD in the US later this month - the big news being that it contains the alternate ending to the theatrical release.

While it did amazingly at the box-office, it was the kind of movie that seemed to stir up opinions of movie-goers. A few liked it all, many liked the first half, and I'm sure that one or two people out there even liked the way the theatrical release ended.

Slashfilm has released this alternate ending to I Am Legend which shows things ending very differently indeed. Worth a look if you want to get a taste of what I Am Legend was like when shown throughout theaters in an alternate-universe. That crazy Will Smith!

Naturally if you haven't seen the film, then be aware - this will probably spoil lots of the movie for you. Click the image below to go to the Slashfilm page and check it out.

Musical Housewives

source: perthnow.com.au
Desperate Housewives may be hitting Broadway, with show creator Mark Cherry dropping hints that the popular series will be turned into a musical.

Speaking to a British radio station, cast member Kyle McLachlan (who plays the part of Bree's husband in the show) mentioned that, "Mark has said that when he finishes his seven years at ABC he plans to go to Broadway and move into the musical world so maybe he does have some designs in that way. That's all he's said so far."

Not the biggest news for people like me - someone not particularly a fan of either musicals or the show, but I am sure the Desperate Housewives fanatics out there would be interested in the news.

The show is still a hugely popular title for Quickflix, with many members a big fan of the suburban antics of stars Eva Longoria, Teri Hatcher, Marcia Cross and Nicollette Sheridan.

Ironman Trailer Released

The brand new full-length trailer for the upcoming superhero film Iron Man has been released and it looks absolutely terrific.

Robert Downey Jr. seems to be absolutely loving the role of weapons expert Tony Stark. This is going to be an absolutely mammoth blockbuster!
