Slumdog Millionaire was the big winner at the BAFTA awards ceremony this morning, taking home seven awards including Best Picture and Best Director.

Danny Boyle‘s Slumdog Millionaire and The Curious Case of Benjamin Button were competing for all the major prizes, with 11 nominations apiece. The Boyle flick dominated the most important categories, leaving Benjamin Button with only three technical awards.

However, the thrilling documentary Man on Wire won Outstanding British Film, beating Slumdog Millionaire in a traditional BAFTA display of having cake and eating it too.

Mickey Rourke won Best Actor for his work in The Wrestler, which places him ahead of Sean Penn (Milk) in the Oscar race.

Kate Winslet brought home Best Actress for The Reader. Seeing anyone take the Best Actress Oscar at this point would be a massive upset.

Heath Ledger posthumously won Best Supporting Actor for The Dark Knight. The award was accepted by TDK producer Charles Roven.

Penelope Cruz nabbed Best Supporting Actress for her firecracker role in Vicky Cristina Barcelona.

WALL-E grabbed Best Animated Film and I’ve Loved You So Long nabbed Best Foreign Film.

The Oscar winners are starting to truly come into focus following the results of the BAFTA’s. With only one major awards ceremony to go (Independent Spirit Awards), we’re coming to the end of this arduous Oscar race.

The Academy Awards will be held February 22nd.
