Deadline Hollywood is reporting that Mickey Rourke and Scarlett Johansson have officially signed on to star in Iron Man 2.
Rourke was reportedly offered a low-ball price of $250,000 to play an undisclosed villain in the highly anticipated superhero sequel. According to Nikki Finke, his Oscar nomination earned him some leverage in the negotiation room, as he has apparently scored a ‘significant’ payday.
Sony was reportedly considering Rourke to play a villain in Spiderman 4, which may have also pushed Marvel into sealing the deal with The Wrestler star.
Although Marvel have made no official announcements regarding Rourke’s involvement, it is expected he will star as the Crimson Dynamo (Tony Stark’s Russian alter-ego, with his very own nuclear powered suit).
Johansson will replace Emily Blunt, who was previously slated to star as the villain Black Widow. However, a pre-existing deal with Fox meant Blunt was forced to star in the upcoming Gulliver’s Travels remake alongside Jack Black.
Apparently Johansson’s deal is much less impressive than Rourke’s, and has her tied to a bunch of upcoming Marvel flicks including The Avengers.
Last month we reported that Marvel had signed Samuel L. Jackson to nine (yes, nine) upcoming movies. It’s good to see that the studio has got their act together, and is finally locking down actors.
Marvel have also updated their upcoming release dates:
Iron Man 2: May 7th, 2010
Thor: July 17th, 2011
The First Avenger – Captain America: July 22nd, 2011
The Avengers: May 4th, 2012
Interesting that Marvel are pitting Thor and Captain America against each other. They couldn’t grab a May release for one of them?
What do you think about these casting decisions? Would you have rather seen Blunt or Johansson as the Black Widow? Are you still looking forward to Iron Man 2?
