Kevin Smith makes a cop movie

source: variety.com

Kevin Smith has been lined up to direct A Couple of Cops for Warner Bros, with Bruce Willis and Tracy Morgan set to star. It will be Smith's first major studio picture.

The film has been written by Robb and Marc Cullen (Las Vegas), and centers on a pair of police officers who must track down a stolen baseball card, rescue a Mexican woman and face off against gangsters.

Robin Williams and James Gandolfini were originally slated to star, back when the film was called "A Couple of Dicks". I guess Warners didn't trust Smith with another provocatively titled film.

UPDATE: Warner Bros have confirmed they will keep the film's original title A Couple of Dicks. Hooray!

Although Bruce Willis is no stranger to comedy, it would be great to see him lampoon his hard-man persona in this picture. Combined with unpredictable firebrand Tracy Morgan (30 Rock), it's hard not to get excited.

Kevin Smith made no attempt at hiding his disappointment with the Weinstein brothers for poorly marketing his previous film Zack and Miri Make a Porno. It is great to see him branch out and direct a film that he hadn't written himself. He is also developing a dystopian horror film called Red State, based on an original screenplay.

Are you happy to see Smith move onto other scripts, or would you prefer he continue to direct his own screenplays?
