New clips from Tarantino’s Inglourious Basterds

A batch of new clips from Quentin Tarantino‘s upcoming Nazi-scalping epic Inglourious Basterds have debuted online, just in time to capitalise on the film’s Cannes victory.

Tarantino debuted the not-quite-final cut of his long gestating film to a divided audience at the Cannes Film Festival last week.

Reviews ranged from the rapturous (“a completely distinctive piece of American pop art with a strong Euro flavor,” says Variety) to the ravenous (“not enough scalps,” says The Daily Mail).

Austrian actor Christopher Waltz received the Best Actor prize at Cannes for his portrayal of a vicious ‘jew-hunter’ named Hans Lada. You can check out a brief clip of his performance below.

In this next clip, Lt Aldo Raine (Brad Pitt) interrogates a German soldier.

Finally, Raine speaks to an injured Bridget von Hammersmark (Diane Kruger) in a Vet’s office. It doesn’t make a lot of sense out of the context of the movie, but whatever.

Tarantino said he will be taking Basterds back to the editing room, although he is not expected to cut any minutes off the film’s two-and-a-half hour running time. In fact, he may even chuck in an extra scene or two.

While the tepid response from Cannes has settled my once maddening expectations, it’s hard not to be excited about a new Tarantino flick, no matter how audacious. I’m one of the few Death Proof defenders out there. I hope I won’t be forced to fight a similarly losing battle when Inglourious Basterds hits Australian cinemas August 20th.
