David Fincher directing Facebook movie?

source: variety.com

Academy Award nominated director David Fincher is in “advanced talks” to direct The Social Network, an Aaron Sorkin-penned film about the formation of Facebook.

Columbia Pictures hired The West Wing creator and Charlie Wilson’s War screenwriter Sorkin last year to write a script about Facebook creator Mark Zuckerberg and the evolution of his social networking behemoth.

Columbia are now circling Fincher as the film’s director in their hopes to begin production by the end of the year.

Facebook was created by Harvard student Zuckerberg in 2004 on campus, and has since grown to have 200 million members worldwide.

I’m a big fan of Fincher’s work (with the exception of Alien 3), and I also have a soft spot for Sorkin’s wordsmithery. But a film about Facebook? Do we really want these guys to spend a year on this when there are so many more interesting stories out there?

Besides, surely this whoe Facebook thing is a fad, like MySpace or Zipper Jeans.

Discuss: Seriously, Fincher is even interested in this? Columbia must have deep pockets. Your thoughts on a Facebook movie? Will we soon hear about The Twitter Story, directed by Martin Scorcese? Will the script be longer than 140 characters???

  1. Really?! Fincher, come on. From Zodiac… to Facebook? No. Please be a joke.

  2. I know everyone is cynical but it might make a good cooperate thriller. Beside I always thought the creator of Facebook, was a bit of an egotistical maniac, and they make fascinating movie characters.

  3. Hold the judgement – who else would you let tackle the "Eating a Koala on a Megayacht" scene: http://www.stuff.co.nz/technology/digital-living/2579691/Did-Facebook-founder-eat-koalashades of Tyler Durden already!
