What's in The Box?!!?!?

source: firstshowing.net

The trailer for Donnie Darko director Richard Kelly's latest thriller The Box has debuted online, and it's about as confounding as you can imagine.

The follow-up to Kelly's much maligned (and frankly incomprehensible) Southland Tales stars Cameron Diaz and James Marsden as a nice southern couple with money problems. When a mysterious man turns up at their door with an even more mysterious box, their problems might be solved forever. Or are their problems just starting?

The mysterious man is played by Frank Langella, who apparently is gunning for the role of Two Face three years too late.

Check out the trailer, and let us know what you think!

Hmmm. While I am a massive fan of hypothetical questions, I'm not sure an entire film could be built around one. Also, the acting seems to have been cut straight out of The Happening and dropped right into the middle of this film.

HOWEVER, maybe a scaled-down, small-idea kind of film is exactly what Kelly needs. He is a great visual director, but sometimes he gets wrapped up in a ball of time-travelling, parallel universe madness. Perhaps he can deliver a short and sweet supernatural thriller.

The Box opens October 29th in Australia.

Discuss: Here is The Box's central question - If you press the button within the box, it will result in the death of someone you do not know. However, you will also receive $1 million dollars. Do you press the button?

It should be noted that this film is based on the 1970 short story "Button, Button" written by Richard Matheson ("I Am Legend"). The story has been filmed once before as a segment of the 1985 revival of "The Twilight Zone" featuring Brad Davis and Mare Winningham.

Nice one! Cheers for the update Trev. I was going to say, it felt like a Twilight Zone offshoot.
