Alive in Joburg shares the same central premise of District 9: the people of South Africa are forced to share their home with a stranded alien race. We originally posted it back in May, but interest around the film seems to be reaching fever pitch. So here it is for your viewing pleasure!
Blomkamp made the short film in 2005 on a miniscule budget. It was produced by Sharlto Copley, who would later star as the main protagonist in District 9. In fact, you can spot him as a sniper at the 3 minute 20 mark of the short.
The short film doesn’t spoil anything in District 9, but it’s interesting to see how an idea can evolve from a six-minute experiment to a $30 million feature film.

It’s important to note that District 9 has more of a sense of humour than Alive in Joburg. The film is dripping satire, AND it is also the best action film of the year so far. In this post-Transformers 2 hellscape, it’s nice to know that some people are still making good action films.
District 9 was produced by Peter Jackson. It hits cinemas Thursday, August 13th.
