Paranormal Activity tops Australian box office

The ultra low-budget spookfest Paranormal Activity has debuted at the top of the Australian box office, beating heavy competition from Where the Wild Things Are and reigning champ The Twilight Saga's New Moon.

Paranormal Activity grossed a solid $2.8 million in its first weekend, complementing its impressive $107 million worldwide grosses.

The Twilight Saga's New Moon slipped to second place in its third week of release with $2.5 million. It has already grossed $30.8 million locally.

Where the Wild Things Are opened at third place, while 2012 and Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs kept new entrants Zombieland and The Informant out of the top five.

Further down the charts, Mao's Last Dancer keeps pulling in money at 13th place. After 10 weeks of release, it is the oldest film in the top 20. It has so far grossed $14 million, making it the highest grossing Australian film of the year.
