Portman and Pride and Prejudice and Zombies

Natalie Portman is set to star in and produce Pride and Prejudice and Zombies, Seth Grahame-Smith's undead update of the classic Jane Austen novel.

Portman is set to play Elizabeth Bennet, the feisty heroine on a quest to eradicate the growing zombie hordes. Her mission is distracted by the arrival of the frustratingly handsome Mr. Darcy.

Although Pride and Prejudice and Zombies is credited to both Austen and Grahame-Smith, Austen had little to do with its revamp. Understandable considering that it was written 192 years after her death. Grahame-Smith basically inserted scenes featuring zombies into Austen's classic story.

The Oscar-nominated Portman will co-produce the project with Handsomecharlie Films' partner Annette Savitch and Darko Films' Richard Kelly, Sean McKittrick and Ted Hamm.

It is unknown when production will begin on the film.

In other Seth Grahame-Smith news, a prequel to the novel will be released March 2010, entitled Pride and Prejudice and Zombies: Dawn of the Dreadfuls.
