R.I.P. Gary Coleman

Former child star Gary Coleman passed away yesterday after being taken off life support at the Utah Valley Regional Medical Centre. He was 42 years old.

Coleman had been hospitalised earlier in the week after sustaining head injuries from a fall at his Utah home. Shannon Price, Coleman’s 24-year-old wife, made the decision to turn off his life support after the actor fell into a coma. It was the actor’s third admission to hospital this year. He was previously admitted in January and February after suffering two seizures.

Coleman was born February 8, 1968 in Illinois. He suffered from a congenital kidney disease which stunted his growth at a young age. His height never surpassed 4ft 8inches, and he maintained a child-like appearance for the rest of his life.

He was best known as the “What you talkin’ bout Willis?”-spouting Arnold Jackson from the sitcom Diff’rent Strokes. The diminutive actor had trouble recapturing the success he enjoyed on Diff’rent Strokes during the past two decades. During his final years, he found himself at the center of several assault charges and controversial legal battles.

Discuss: Your favourite memories of Gary Coleman’s career? I will always remember fondly his self-deprecating appearance on The Simpsons.
