First look at Russell Brand in Arthur

The New York Times have the first official images of Russell Brand in the remake of the classic 1981 comedy Arthur.

Brand stars as a rich, hard-drinking playboy who stands to lose his inheritance after falling for a charming pickpocket (Greta Gerwig).

The NY Times article offers an interesting insight into the writing process of the film’s screenplay. Originally scripted by Peter Baynham – one of the Oscar-nominated writers of Borat – the screenplay was then handed over to Jared Stern for a polish. Director Jason Winer (one of the leading directors of Modern Family making his feature film debut) then brought the script to the Modern Family writing room for a line-by-line punch up.

Then, quick-thinkers Russell Brand and Greta Gerwig were encouraged to improvise on set. Will it translate to fluid lucidity or pure chaos? We’ll find out when it hits cinemas in 2011.

Arthur also stars Helen Mirren and Luis Guzman. Head on over to the NY Times to read more about the film.

Discuss: Is Arthur worthy of a remake? Does Russell Brand seem like an adequate fit for Dudley Moore‘s (rather diminutive) shoes?
