Christopher Guest has been responsible for some of the best comedies of the past few decades, having directed the mockumentaries Waiting for Guffman, Best in Show and A Mighty Wind, as well as co-writing and starring in the classic comedy This Is Spinal Tap. According to Wowowow, Guest and his troupe of hilarious improvisers are now gearing up for a new project, in which they will take aim at obsessive retro collectors.
Guest, as well as usual suspects Harry Shearer, Michael McKean, John Michael Higgins, Jane Lynch and Parker Posey are all expected to star as the obsessive collectors of “old comic books, Barbie dolls, vintage magazine ads, vinyl 45-rpm singles, [and] even…Charles Manson song lyrics written on Kleenex”.
It is unknown if his latest film will take on the mockumentary format (as in all those aforementioned pictures). His last movie – the funny, but far from memorable For Your Consideration – eschewed Guest’s traditional filmmaking style and took on a traditional narrative format.
Although For Your Consideration was still entertaining, it was notably crueler and more mean-spirited than his previous pictures (although, it’s more fun to make fun of Hollywood than dog lovers, amateur actors and folk singers). Hopefully Guest can make another warm film along the lines of A Mighty Wind.
We’re greatly interested in anything that involving this hilarious crew, so we’ll be sure to keep you updated on any news as it develops.
