>Trailer Debut: The Other Woman

>The trailer for Natalie Portman’s new film The Other Woman has been released by IFC Films. Don Roos directs this adaptation of Ayelet Waldman’s novel Love and Other Impossible Pursuits, where Portman plays stepmother to a young boy – a relationship that doesn’t flow naturally for her.

The film premiered at Toronto back in September to positive (though nominal) reviews. The move by IFC Films to release The Other Woman through Video On Demand in America, followed by a limited release in select theatres, speaks volumes of the tone of this film. The trailer suggests an almost Hallmark Channel made-for-TV movie.

The premise isn’t entirely origina,l though the cast promises to be strong; Lisa Kudrow, Lauren Ambrose and Scott Cohen join Portman, with the role of the stepson played by Charlie Tahan, who recently hit our screens in Charlie St Cloud.

The main problem with this trailer is that it tells you the entire film; it seems there isn’t much left to discover if you eventually see it. Portman begins affair with a married man, marries said man, has a child, loses child, has a bad relationship with husband’s child from former relationship, begins forming relationship with child, happy ending eluded to. Unless there’s a big twist or some stellar performances, consider us slightly uninterested in this film.

Discuss: How do you feel about trailers that give away the entire plot?
