I also join Warner Bros., Legendary and the producers in saying how excited we are about the casting of Henry. He is the perfect choice to don the cape and S shield.”
Cavill – of TV’s The Tudors and the upcoming Tarsem film Immortals – reportedly beat fellow Brit Matthew Goode to the role. Also rans include The Social Network’s Armie Hammer, Matthew Bomer (White Collar), Joe Manganiello (True Blood) and Colin O’Donaghue.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Cavill had originally auditioned to star in Superman Returns back in the mid-2000s, before being pipped at the post by Brandon Routh. He had also previous vied for Nolan’s attention last decade to star as Bruce Wayne in Batman Begins.
The as-yet-untitled Superman movie arrives in cinemas December 2012.
