The trailer for Australian novelist-turned-director Julia Leigh’s Cannes-approved debut Sleeping Beauty has landed online. It stars Emily Browning as a young prostitute who submits herself to the ‘Sleeping Beauty Chamber’, in which her clients can do to her as they please while she sleeps.
As you would expect for a film with this title – but perhaps not from a newbie director – the cinematography is particularly dreamlike and rather gorgeous to behold. It manages to combine sensuality with a kind of grotesqueness befitting a film with this precise plot description. Browning is a talented actress (although she didn’t really get to show off her true talents in Sucker Punch), so hopefully Sleeping Beauty will provide her with the breakout role she deserves. Side note: she really loves films about brothels!
Check out the (NSFW) trailer below!
Sleeping Beauty will compete for the Palme d’Or at Cannes next month, and will hopefully arrive in Australian June 23rd.

Will this be coming out on DVD? I’ve missed it in the cinema and am really looking forward to seeing it.
