According to Variety, India’s Central Board of Film Certification did not appreciate the sequences in question (three sex scenes and two rape scenes, four of which feature Rooney Mara‘s Lisbeth Salander nude), and would only release a censored cut of the film. Traditionally, the CBFC blur nude scenes, but in this instance demanded cuts.
Originally planned for a January release, The Girl with the Dragon Tatoo was moved to February to accomodate the edits.
It was all to no avail, however. When the prickly Fincher insisted only an “uncut version” of the flick could be released, Sony Pictures took it upon themselves to pull their February date from the schedule.
Discuss: Sorry India! It was really good too!
