It’s been a big week for upcoming Australian musical The Sapphires, with its Cannes debut imminent and recent acquisition by The Weinstein Company for international distribution rights. Now we’re given a new poster and audition clip from the film to whet our appetites.
The poster is simple yet striking, showcasing Deborah Mailman, Jessica Mauboy, Shari Sebbens and Miranda Tapsell in shimmering sapphire-blue gowns. Chris O’Dowd, who plays the group’s manager, is also present, and adds some international flare to the Australian production. The tagline is a little cheesy, yet fitting: “Follow Your Heart. Discover Your Soul.”
Our first glimpse at the girls in action comes by way of an audition clip from the movie, as the group belts out a soulful tune that would see them go on to entertain troops in Vietnam during the late 1960s.
The Sapphires will open the Melbourne International Film Festival on August 2, 2012. It opens across Australia August 9, 2012.
